Mark 3:20-30 "The Madness of Jesus"
What would our society’s reaction be to Jesus today?
Instead of praising God for the great things Jesus was doing, His own family thought He was mad.
Mark 3:21 . . .
“And when His friends heard of it…” KJV
“And when His family heard of it…”NIV
“And when His own people heard…”NKJV/NAS
In this passage we have opposition coming from two camps:
- His own family.
- Delegation of scribes from Jerusalem.
Imbedded in this passage are several important principles useful in our walk with the Lord.
Peril (3:22-26) The peril of a divided house
Accusation from the scribes was that Jesus was possessed by a demon. Jesus reply: “a house divided cannot stand.”
This is a principle of life. To oppose yourself is to fail at what you are trying to do.
If we would enjoy the benefits of success in the kingdom, we need to put unityvision and common on the list of our top priorities.
If there is something that the Church at large needs today, it is to be consistent, united behind a common vision, moving together toward the same goal. 1 Corinthians 1:10
Preeminence (3:27) The Preeminence of a victorious Savior
Jesus had bound the strong man. The strong man was Satan.
Another principle of the Kingdom of God: Jesus has broken the power of the enemy in our lives.
We can now walk in victory.
The preeminence of the victorious Savior means that all the promises of God are a resounding “yes” to us.
Presumption (3:28-30)
The presumption of a blasphemous attitude
The scribe’s presumptuous and blasphemous attitude was putting their souls in eternal peril.
Many do the same thing today – it is usually religious people
The attitude of the scribes is the same one which resides in those who commit the unpardonable sin. It is the attitude of rejecting the Spirit’s work and witness.
It seems the unpardonable sin is a continued, willful rejection of the Spirit’s witness of Jesus.
This attitude of rejecting the Spirit’s witness to Christ can never be forgiven because it keeps one from coming to Christ.
Sin separates us from fellowship with the Lord.
