What’s Wrong With Entertainment?
“When it come to sexuality and profanity, TV and movies have got a long way to go.” Comedy Central Host
There are many things wrong with entertainment today, but I just want to mention four…
Pollutes Our Children
The devil has found an irresistible tool to poison and destroy the spiritual lives of an entire generation of children.
We are living in days very much like Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Luke 18
- 2 Peter 2:5-10
Without proper guidance from you and me and without the grace of Jesus Christ, the slime and filth of television and film will pollute our children.
Warps Our Morals
“The mind is the battleground on which every moral and spiritual battle is fought.” J. Oswald Sanders
Romans 16:19
Wastes Our Time
“In other centuries, human beings wanted to be saved, or improved, or freed, or educated. But in our century, they want to be entertained. The great fear is not of disease or death, but of boredom. A sense of time on our hands, a sense of nothing to do. A sense that we are not amused. But where will this mania for entertainment end?” Timeline, Michael Crichton
There should be a basic difference between Christians and non-Christians regarding leisure.
For the Christian:
- Ephesians 2:10
- Psalm 90
The main difference: The world works in order to take its leisure. We Christians view our leisure time as necessary to refresh us for the work God has given us to do.
The world works in order to relax, and the Christian relaxes in order to work.
Psalm 119:37
Cheapen Our Thoughts
Overcoming stress and tension in our daily lives is addressed in Phil. 4:4-9.
Our thought and minds should focus on eight things:
True: That which is true is that which corresponds most perfectly with Jesus Christ and His Word. John 14 and 17.
Honest: Honorable, pertaining to what is worthy of respect, grave, honest, appropriate.
Just: Righteous, just, upright.
Pure: 1 Tim. 5:22 & 1 John 3:3
Lovely: Pleasing and lovely. Things that are harmonious and pleasant.
Good Report: Admirable. “good saying.”
Virtue: Excellent.
Praise: Praiseworthy. Worthy of praise.
“Summing it all up, friends, I’d say you’ll do best by filling your minds and meditating on things true, noble, reputable, authentic, compelling, gracious – the best, not the worst; the beautiful, not the ugly; things to praise, not things to curse.” The Message, Eugene Peterson
